Printers

Connect a receipt, kitchen, label or document printer to the Otura desktop app, give it a role on this till, set its copies, paper width and line speed, and check that it really prints.

Checked against the product on 21 October 2026

Otura prints receipts, kitchen tickets, labels and documents straight to the printer, with no print dialog. That needs the Otura desktop app: in a web browser the printer page only says Direct printing requires the Otura desktop app.

Everything below is on SettingsThis devicePrinters, on the computer the printer is plugged into.

1. Find the printer

Available Printers lists the printers this computer can see. Click Refresh after plugging one in. Each one carries a badge:

BadgeWhat it means
DetectedThe computer can see a device here. It has not been asked whether it works — Test Print does that (step 4).
Documents onlyA Windows queue that makes a file or sends a fax: Microsoft Print to PDF, XPS Document Writer, OneNote, Fax. It is offered for the Invoice and Purchasing roles only — it cannot print a receipt.
AssignedThe printer already has a role.
  • USB receipt printers on Windows are listed with no driver to install: plug the printer in and click Refresh.
  • Serial printers on Windows. USB-to-serial cables and paired Bluetooth printers are always listed. The COM ports built into the computer itself are hidden, because they are almost never a printer. If your printer is cabled into one, turn on Show all serial ports. The switch is remembered on this computer.
  • Bluetooth printers. A classic Bluetooth printer is paired in the computer's own Bluetooth settings first; it then appears under Available Printers. Bluetooth LE printers are found with Scan under Bluetooth LE Printers.
  • Network printers are added by hand under Network Printers: type the IP Address, optionally a Printer Name, and click Add Printer. Otura sends to port 9100.

2. Give it a role

Under Printer Assignments, pick a printer for each job. Leave a role on None if you have no printer for it. The card says how roles are shared: Receipt, kitchen, report and label printers belong to this till. Invoice and purchasing printers are shared: documents sent from any device print at the station that holds them.

  • Receipt, Kitchen, Report and Label printers are set up on each till. Setting up a second till's printer leaves the first till's alone. A network printer can be set up on every till that should use it; a USB printer prints only from the till it is plugged into.
  • Invoice and Purchasing printers are one per business. Assigning one on another computer moves it there.
RoleWhat prints there
Receipt PrinterCustomer receipts from the till.
Invoice Printer / Purchasing PrinterA4 documents. They can be sent from another device, such as a salesman’s phone, and print on this computer.
Kitchen PrinterThe kitchen ticket, when an order is sent to the kitchen — see Sending orders to the kitchen.
Report PrinterThe X-Report, the Z-Report and the shift's Closing Session report — see Closing a shift.
Label PrinterShelf labels: turn on Print a shelf label after adding in Quick add item — see Shelf labels.

Removing a printer. Choose None on its role. This works even when the printer is unplugged and no longer listed: the role still shows the printer it is set to, so you can see what the till is printing to and clear it.

3. Set copies, paper width and line speed

Under Configuration, choose the role in Configure Role, then:

  • Copies — how many of each job the role prints: receipts, reports, kitchen tickets, labels and invoice or purchasing documents. A bill, a test print, and a report printed on the receipt printer because no Report Printer is set, always print once. So do labels from Barcodes and labels, where you set how many of each. A document sent from another device prints the copies set on the printer at the station, unless the sender asked for a number.
  • Paper Width — 58 mm or 80 mm, to match the roll, for the Report, Kitchen and Label printers. For the Receipt Printer the screen shows the receipt's own width instead — for example Receipts print at 80mm, the width set in Settings › Receipts. — change it there (see Receipt settings). Invoice and Purchasing printers print A4 and have no roll width.
  • Line Speed (baud) — shown only for a serial or Bluetooth serial printer. Choose 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600 or 115200. It must match the printer: its self-test page shows the speed, and most serial receipt printers use 9600, 19200 or 38400. If you never set it, Otura uses 115200.
  • Kitchen ticket language — for the Kitchen Printer only, once a printer holds the role: Same as the business (the default), English, العربية or Français. Dishes, options and the ticket's own words print in this language. A dish with no name in it keeps its main name. Like the role, it belongs to this till. Same as the business follows the language chosen in SettingsKitchen; see The kitchen's language.

4. Test it

  1. Pick the role in Configure Role

  2. Click Test Print

Otura sends a test page, then asks the printer whether it is there.

A test page is printed once, whatever Copies says. For the Receipt Printer it uses the receipt's width from Settings › Receipts, so it shows the layout your receipts will actually have.

MessageWhat it means
The printer answered and the test page was sentIt works.
Test page sent, but the printer did not answerThe page left the computer, but nothing replied. Check that the printer is switched on, that the cable is in the port you chose, and that the line speed matches the printer’s self-test page.
Test page sent to the print queueThe printer is an ordinary Windows or macOS print queue, which cannot answer. Look at the printer to see whether the page came out.
Test print failedThe page could not be sent at all. The message underneath says why.

When a print stops part-way

If the paper runs out or the cover is opened while something is printing, part of it may already be on paper — and many printers finish the rest by themselves once the roll is changed or the cover closed. So Otura does not print it again on its own — not even through the computer's print dialog. The till shows its usual failure message (Print failed for a receipt or report, The kitchen ticket did not print for a kitchen ticket) with the reason from the desktop app, which begins The printer stopped partway through this job. Check what came out, and reprint only if it did not finish. A printer that is off or unplugged took nothing, so Otura keeps retrying that as before.

Shelf labels

In Quick add item, turn on Print a shelf label after adding. When the item is saved, its label — name, barcode (or SKU) and price — prints on this till's Label Printer:

  • On a USB, serial, Bluetooth or network label printer, with a scannable barcode. A code with characters a barcode cannot carry, such as Arabic, prints as text instead of a barcode.
  • On a label printer installed in Windows or macOS with its own driver, silently, to that printer, with a scannable barcode (EAN-13 for a 13-digit barcode, otherwise CODE128) and its digits under it, one label per page.
  • With no Label Printer set on this till, the computer's print dialog opens: for Quick add's label with the code as text, as before; for Barcodes and labels with the barcodes drawn. If the label printer fails, the till shows The label did not print.

When a USB, serial, Bluetooth or network label printer stops part way through a run from Barcodes and labels, the message also says how far it got, such as 120 of 300 labels printed before it stopped. Print only the rest, so no label comes out twice.

Arabic on printed slips

Receipts, kitchen tickets, reports and labels are drawn by the desktop app with its own Arabic font before they are sent, so Arabic product names and a report printed from a till in Arabic come out as written — whatever character sets the printer itself supports. A label's barcode is the one thing the printer draws itself.
