The exchange rate: what a dollar is worth in lira

Setting the dollar-to-lira rate the tills use, its history, the range Otura accepts, and why a sale already rung keeps the rate it was rung at.

Prices live in dollars. The till shows every total in lira too, takes lira, and gives change in lira, at one rate: what a dollar is worth today. You set that rate yourself, under SettingsExchange rates.

Setting today's rate

  1. Open the rate

Open SettingsExchange rates. Current Exchange Rate shows the rate in use, for example 1 USD = LBP 89,500, and when it was last changed.

  2. Override it

Press Override. Under New Rate (LBP per USD), type how many lira a dollar is worth, for example 90000, and press Save Rate.

Settings › Exchange rates: Current Exchange Rate 1 USD = LBP 89,500, the Manual Override form with New Rate (LBP per USD) 90000, Valid range: 1,000 - 1,000,000 LBP, Save Rate and Cancel, and the Rate History below.
A new rate, typed in lira per dollar.
  3. Check it took

The new rate is the current one and heads Rate History, with its date, the change from the one before, and Manual as its source. Every till uses it from its next order.

Settings › Exchange rates after the change: Current Exchange Rate 1 USD = LBP 90,000, and Rate History listing LBP 90,000 at the top, Manual, above the earlier rates.
The new rate in use, at the top of the history.

Otura accepts a rate from 1,000 to 1,000,000 lira for a dollar. A rate outside that range is refused and the current one stays.

A sale keeps its own rate

Every sale keeps the rate it was rung at. Changing the rate today never changes what an earlier sale says in lira: its receipt, its line in History and its detail still read Rate: 1 USD = 89,500 LBP if that was the rate then. A return pays back the lira at the sale's own rate too, not today's (see Returns and exchanges).

An order still open on a till when the rate changes is a different case; see When the exchange rate changes during an order.

Cash is another. Lira in a drawer, the safe or the bank is valued in your books at the rate in force when it moved, and brought to the rate of each month's last day when you close the month. How each rate is used, and what that does to your figures, is in How money moves. When to set the rate in your day is in Your money routine.
